Other Activities / unique to area Grand Marais is an ideal area for those interested in fine quality regional arts and crafts. Many of the studios and art galleries offer year-round special activities and openings within walking distance, notably the Sivertson Gallery and Betsy Bowen Studio. There are at least 12 other smaller galleries and shops specializing in quality arts and crafts. For traditional crafts you can take classes at the North House Folk School. The Grand Marais Art Colony has been offering classes, workshops and week-long retreats for over 30 years. The creative energy is palpable when you enter Grand Marais.
On site is a fiber art studio specializing in knit wear, felting and creative beadwork and jewelry. Please inquire about possible fiber related teaching sessions for your group or family (learn to knit, felt, make a keepsake bracelet, etc.)
Grand Marais is a gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) with many opportunities for canoeing, hiking, blueberry picking, wildlife watching (moose, deer, loon, eagle) and more. Live like a local: walk or paddle all day and come home to a warm comfortable bed.
